Congratulations on signing up for a summer program with The Honest Horsewoman!
We are so excited to meet you and to introduce you to our horses. In order to be prepared for your first lesson, here are some things you should know:
1. We are a private facility. We recommend arriving about 5 minutes early to your lesson to get settled, but please do not arrive more than 15 minutes early. Supervision from The Honest Horsewoman staff is required at all times while on the farm, for safety and liability reasons.
2. Please park near the house when arriving. It can be tempting to drive up to the barn but we need to keep that area clear for the horses. There is seating available near the barn for anyone with you who is not participating in the lesson.
3. Keep guests to a minimal so that you can focus on your lesson. A minimum of one adult caretaker is REQUIRED to stay for the duration of the lesson with students under 16 years of age, but its best if they are the only ones coming. Too many people watching can be stressful for our students.
4. Dress for the weather. 99% of our programs are run outside regardless of the weather. We do our best to work on skills that are most comfortable in the given weather (eg. groundwork or horse science under cover on a rainy day, bathing the horses or working in the shade on very hot days), but we recommend wearing layers and bringing a water bottle to maximize your comfort while at our farm.
5. What to bring:
- Long pants are recommended but not required for riding.
- Closed-toed shoes are required for ANY interactions with the horses.
- Boots with a heel are required for riding with tack, exceptions may be made for bareback riding.
- An ASTM/SEI certified riding helmet is required to participate in mounted work and MAY be required for unmounted work. We do have some you can borrow but it is best if you bring your own to ensure you have a helmet that fits you well.
- We recommend tying back long hair for your comfort while wearing a helmet but that is not required.
6. If you are unable to attend your scheduled program, please let us know ASAP.
